Specification・Features

MALDI-TOF MS is a matrix-assisted laser desporption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometer combining matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS). This mass spectrometry method is used to measure the mass of difficult-to-ionize components (refractory substances, less soluble substances). Particularly, it allows accurate mass measurements of biopolymers (proteins and saccharides) are ionized under soft conditions. In MALDI, the analyte and the matrix (a laser-absorbing compound) are mixed together. When an ultraviolet laser beam (Nd: YAG laser with a wavelength of 349 nm) is directed at the mixture, it is ionized. The time of flight over a certain distance is measured in a high vacuum of 10-8 torr to calculate the mass of the sample. There are TOF-MS measurement modes: a linear mode where the ions are accelerated linearly and a reflector mode where they are accelerated linearly and then reflected by an electrostatic mirror.
